God, You do it.

My son is quickly approaching three…and wanting total independence.
We have officially reached the stage of “Mommy, I do it!”

He wants to pour the milk…and spill it everywhere.
He wants to fix his hair…see picture for wild details…
He wants to pick his own clothes out…that I can totally embrace.
He wants to do it all, and I appreciate his effort for independence.
After all, isn’t that part of the goal of parenting?

For most things, I stand by offering words of guidance as he stumbles along.
For other things, I gently talk him through the step-by-step process.
For a few things, I let him  fail until he realizes he still needs me.

In a recent battle with his fruit snack package, he grew frustrated.
I sat nearby and allowed him to wrestle and war with the bag.
Finally, he looked at me with resignation, Mommy, you do it.
*Insert heart check and conviction.*
Four words, forever imprinted.

I wanted to help, but gave him room to recognize his need.
I waited for my son to surrender control and let me help.

Sounds all too familiar…

How often does God watch us in the same way?
He sees us fight to fix our messes, frustrated and defeated.
He watches us strive to move forward in our own strength.
He waits for a chance to intervene while we insist on doing it our way.

I’ve done things my way, only to beg God to lead me back to His way.
I’ve said, “God, I do it,” only to follow with “God, you do it.”

I think we often think our dependence is equivalent to failure or immaturity.
This is what our culture says: You got this! You can do it! Be self-confident and independent.

Our dependence on God isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s an outward indication of trust and honor.

It shows our humble need for Him.
It reveals our heart’s desire for His will.
It aligns our life with His plan.

In every circumstance and season, I want to say, “God, You do it.”
God, You lead me in Your way.
God, You heal me and free me.
God, You take care of this.

Maybe you’ve taken control, attempting to fix your marriage.
Maybe you’re trying to a control a child that seems to be lost.
Maybe you’re manipulating finances or a job situation.

I encourage you to hand it over and humbly say, God, You do it.

Our surrender doesn’t stop there, because with submission comes our mission.

We are called to live at the cross-section of relent and responsibility.
We yield to Him, but must move forward in obedience.
It’s where “God, you do it.” meets “Send me. I’ll go.”

Scripture:
Proverbs 14:12
There is a way that seems right to man, but its end is the way to death.

Proverbs 3:5-6
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways submit to him and he will make your paths straight.

Proverbs 19:21
Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.

Prayer:
God, Your ways are higher and your plan is better. I surrender to you today.
I release the need for control, and I give you my plan. Step into my life have Your way.

God, You do it.
