Bugs, Rocks, or Flowers
I love when my son picks flowers for me.
I love it the same when he brings me dead bugs and dull rocks.
It’s true.
There is something special about my son seeing a rock and thinking, I want to give that to my mom.
There is something even more special when he offers it to me, Mom, look! For you!
It doesn’t matter the content of his hands when he comes running to offer me something.
It is all about the intention and position of his heart.
His heart is pure when he presents his offerings.
His heart is set on me instead of himself.
His heart is wanting to give, not receive.
His heart is craving connection.
Do you see it?
God loves when you give Him what you can.
He doesn’t always care about the content of your offering,
but He always cares about the intention of your offering.
In Luke 7, Jesus teaches Samuel a lesson on offering when a sinful woman beautifully surrenders her most valued possession. “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave me no water for my feet, but she, with her tears, has washed my feet and wiped them with her hair.”
Simon gave no greeting and paid Jesus no attention.
The woman, although she had little, humbled herself and gave all she had.
Her time. Her focus. Her service. Her only possession. Her heart.
I imagine this is what my son is doing when he proudly presents crunchy bugs and jagged rocks.
He is coming to me for a connection. He is offering his only possessions for a piece of my heart.
I admire his offerings, accept the bugs, and adore his intention.
The same way that Jesus admires and accepts her offering:
”Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—as her great love has shown.”
So, am I Simon or the sinner?
Do I neglect Him, but still expect from Him?
Or do I willingly give Him all that I have?
